BARANGAY Ginebra seeks to find its title-contending groove when it takes on GlobalPort on Sunday night in their PBA Philippine Cup matchup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The last Governors’ Cup champions have split their first two games as Gin Kings coach Tim Cone blamed their Sunday-only schedule for preventing them from getting into tip-top shape.

The league logically features Ginebra usually on Sundays, being its top draw.

Exactly a week after their first win of the season, an 81-74 decision of Rain or Shine, the Gin Kings are eager to build momentum this time as they return to action against a promising Batang Pier side at 6:45 p.m.

“We’re still looking for our game early in the conference,” Cone said. “We have yet to catch a rhythm, and we’re hoping we can start to step it up as we go up against Global.”

Cone expects a tough outing against the Batang Pier, who had won their first two games and were poised for a hat-trick of victories only to suffer a meltdown halfway through the fourth against the Aces, resulting in a 95-84 defeat.

“They are tough, and except for the last six minutes or so of their Alaska game, they have pretty much dominated their opponents so far this conference,” the champion coach added. “We certainly have our work cut out for us.”

Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle continue to shoulder most of the scoring load, but the Batang Pier have now found another significant contributor in offseason acquisition JR Quiñahan.

They match against an equally deadly Ginebra backcourt led by LA Tenorio, Scottie Thompson, and Sol Mercado, anchored down low by Japeth Aguilar and Joe Devance.

In the curtain-raiser, San Miguel Beer seeks to get back on track when it takes on winless Mahindra at 4:30 p.m.
