JUNE Mar Fajardo sank a jumper with 1.1 seconds to force overtime and San Miguel went on to frustrate Barangay Ginebra with a 104-97 win on Sunday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Ginebra stood 3.6 seconds away from a much-needed victory but Fajardo got the inbound from Alex Cabagnot, rose for a mid-range jumper against longtime rival Greg Slaughter, then watched the ball bounce in, setting the stage for overtime, 93-all.
Arwind Santos took over from there, opening extra time with two three-pointers as San Miguel opened a 102-95 victory on the way to their second successive win after a 0-3 start.
Ginebra slumped to its third straight loss and fell to 1-5.
Renaldo Balkman had 27 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks for the Beermen although he committed nine turnovers in his first match-up against former Alab Pilipinas teammate Justin Brownlee.
Fajardo was just as formidable with 24 points and 19 rebounds in the victory. Santos was also clutch as he had 19 points, including eight in overtime.
“We knew from the start that this would be an exciting game,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria. “Both of us are struggling this conference. This game is important. Fortunately, we were able to get this victory.
"It could be a good morale booster for us going to the next game.”
Brownlee had 18 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists, and five blocks but shot just 7-of-27 from the field for the Gin Kings. Japeth Aguilar had 17 and Joe Devance 15 - all on three-pointers.
