UNKNOWN to many, Barangay Ginebra was silently rooting for Rain or Shine in its game against Meralco on Sunday night in the PBA Governors Cup.
And the Kings sure owe the Elasto Painters.
By storming back from a double-digit deficit and beating the Bolts, 96-89, on Sunday night, the Elasto Painters kept the Kings alive in the hunt for the two remaining playoff berth in the season-ending conference.
So far, already assured of making the next round are Alaska (8-2), San Miguel (8-3), Rain or Shine (7-4), Globalport (6-4), Barako Bull (6-5) and Star, which is at 5-5 but, owing to a superior quotient, will still reach the playoffs even if loses its final game against Blackwater on Tuesday.
The last two berths are being contested by four teams, namely Meralco (5-5), Talk ‘N Text (5-6), Ginebra (4-6), and Kia (4-6).
A win by the Bolts against the Elasto Painters could have clinched them an outright quarterfinals berth and left Ginebra out in the cold, PBA chief statistician and Spin.ph columnist Fidel Mangonon III confirmed.
That's because Ginebra's only chance of making the playoffs is in the event of a four-way tie at 5-6 among Meralco, KIA, Talk 'N Text and the Kings or a five-way tie at 5-6 that will also involve Star in the unlikely event of a Hotshots loss to Blackwater.
As things stand now, Ginebra can reach the playoffs with a win over NLEX on Wednesday and a KIA win over Meralco, which would create a four-way tie for seventh place among Ginebra, KIA, Meralco and Talk 'N Text.
In such a scenario, Ginebra will enter the playoffs by virtue of a higher quotient (0) since it beat KIA, 105-98, and lost by smaller margins to Talk 'N Text, 95-99, and Meralco, 99-102.
Talk 'N Text will end up in the wayside in that four-way tie, no thanks to its lopsided 85-119 loss to Meralco.
Meralco should enter the playoffs while KIA will be left out in the cold.
Here's the updated scenarios:
