BARANGAY Ginebra and Magnolia clash in a marquee quarterfinal series beginning on Saturday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Game One of their series is at 6:45 p.m. in the second game of a Petron Blaze Saturday Special doubleheader.
The Kings clinched the third seed in the quarterfinals and will play the sixth ranked squad which turned out to be their archrival in the Hotshots, who clinched the seeding with a 102-74 win over NLEX last April 3 following three straight wins.
Ginebra coach Tim Cone noted how both teams entered the quarterfinals with a cluster of wins even after the Kings lost to NorthPort at the end of the eliminations.
“We've won five in a row and lost. We've won six of seven before the lost tonight, and we played pretty well in a non-bearing game. I think we're kind of in a roll too. That's why I think it's going to be a great series.
“They're playing at a high level,” Cone said, referring to Magnolia. “They've recovered back from their championship hangover and they're ready to move forward. Obviously, they wanted to play us. They blew out their opponent so they could have an opportunity to play against us. We know that. We're sister teams but we're not friendly.”
For his part, Magnolia coach Chito Victolero said he would choose facing Ginebra in a best-of-three quarterfinals rather than playing against a team with a twice-to-beat advantage.
“We know Ginebra can beat us. But we also have a chance to beat Ginebra. So equal. Siguro nung last game namin noong elimination, overtime, so parang breaks of the game din ‘yun. Nandoon kami sa situation na equal opportunity, hindi ‘yung kapag talo kami, out kami,” Victolero said.
TNT and San Miguel open their quarterfinal series at 4:30 p.m.
