BARANGAY Ginebra hopes to learn how to harness the energy from its “sixth man” better as it takes on Talk ‘N Text in the last day of the Smart Bro-PBA Philippine Cup elimination round on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Already assured of respective twice-to-beat advantages in the quarterfinals after Barako Bull lost to Alaska on Saturday, the Gin Kings and and Tropang Texters seek to just sustain their momentum heading into first round of the playoffs in the 5:15 p.m. encounter.
Much more is at stake in the first game of the doubleheader at 3 o’clock as Mahindra and Blackwater, expansion teams last year, collide in an expected dogfight for a first-ever postseason berth.
The main game, though, promises to still be as exciting as the Gin Kings and Texters, tied in fifth spot with similar 6-4 win-loss records, seek to enter the playoffs on a strong note.
The Gin Kings once again hope to bank on the crowd, which catapulted them out of a huge 22-point hole in their 91-90 squeaker over NLEX last Sunday.
“It’s a huge weapon,” Gin Kings coach Tim Cone said. “Hopefully we learn how to use that weapon and take advantage of it.”
“They lift you at times when you shouldn’t really be lifted,” the champion coach added of their legions of fans. “They lift you, sustain you through your comeback, and give you a chance to get back in the game.”
The Texters, on the other hand, are coming off a 107-96 victory over GlobalPort last Friday.
The winner of the Ginebra-TNT affair will face eighth seed Barako Bull,,while the loser takes on seventh seed NLEX.
Rain or Shine, the third seed, is waiting for the survivor of the Mahindra-Blackwater matchup.
