BARANGAY Ginebra made some noise in the PBA Season 50 Draft after picking unheralded Sonny Estil in the first round of the annual proceedings on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Music Hall.
Estil, formerly of Letran and currently with the Pampanga Giant Lanterns in the MPBL, landed at No. 11, his name creating the biggest buzz once deputy coach Johnny Abarrientos called out his name.

The draft stock of the 6-foot-3 blue collar forward obviously rose when he emerged MVP of the Draft Combine tournament where he steered a team that carried the Ginebra name to the championship.
Estil's selection came five picks after Magnolia, now under new head coach LA Tenorio, chose former San Beda stalwart Yukien Andrada at sixth overall.

Andrada, who had a pre-draft workout with the Hotshots, will help fill in the void left by William Navarro, who recently signed a contract in the Korean Basketball League, and veteran Rafi Reavis.
After Geo Chiu was taken No. 1 overall by Terrafirma, Juan Gomez de Liano at No. 2 by Converge with a pick obtained from Phoenix, and Dalph Panopio at No. 3 by Blackwater, the selections went haywire.
Ateneo's Chris Koon at No. 4 by Northport on behalf of buyer Pureblends Corp., LJay Gonzales of Far Eastern University by NLEX at No. 5 and Fil-Am guard Jason Brickman at No. 7 by the Meralco Bolts.

Phoenix used the eighth overall selection it acquired from Converge on former NCAA MVP Will Gozum, San Miguel made Chris Miller the No. 9 pick, while Rain or Shine used its two first-round picks on Christian Manaytay (No. 10) and June Roque (No. 12), respectively.
Barangay Ginebra began the second round by adding yet another ceiling after tabbing 6-foot-7 Mario Barasi at no. 13 and then taking on coach Olsen Racela’s player at University of Perpetual Help in John Abis at no. 23 overall.
Phoenix took Dave Ando the 14th pick followed by Ximone Sandagon of Far Eastern University, (Blackwater), La Salle guard CJ Austria (Northport), and Arvin Gamboa (NLEX).
Burly Shawn Umali landed at Terrafirma at no. 16, and Vince Magbuhos for Meralco at 17th.
Rain or Shine picked three more players in the second round in Mark Denver Omega (20th), Vince Cuajao (22nd), and Vincent Joshua David (24th).
In between at no. 19 was Kobe Bryan Monjoe for Converge.
Terrafirma picked first in the third round with Aurin Catacutan, before former Batang Gilas Harvey Pagsanjan went to Phoenix, one-time University of the East team captain Jack Cruz-Dumont to Blackwater, St. Benilde’s Mark Sangco to Northport, Arellano big man Lorenz Capulong (NLEX), Gab Gomez (Magnolia), Ethan Galang (Meralco), St. Benilde playmaker Tony Ynot (Converge), Royce Mantua (San Miguel), Cole Micek (Rain or Shine), and Jose Antonio Quitevez going to TNT as the team’s first pick in this draft.

Magnolia and TNT were the next two teams that passed in the fifth round which saw Terrafirma taking Royce Alforque, Kris Gurtiza to Phoenix, Dominic Panlilio at Blackwater, Jonathan Gesalem to Northport, Benedict Benedictos to Magnolia, Jeff Comia finding his way at Meralco, John Paul Cauilan to Converge, Alejandrino Inigo at San Miguel, and Rain or Shine tabbing MJ Dela Virgen.
After getting an influx of draftees, Rain or Shine finally passed in the sixth round and so did Meralco and Phoenix, but Terrafirma got John Bravo, Blackwater received Gjerard Wilson, Jonas Tibayan to Northport, Mark Ramirez at NLEX, Dan Mallari at Converge, and Jacey Cruz at San Miguel.
Emmanuel Codinera, son of PBA legend Jerry Codinera, finally heard his name selected at 63rd overall by Blackwater in the seventh round, while Ira Battaler went to Terrafima, Kobe Bryant Pableo (Northport), Alain Madrigal (NLEX), and John Jordan Sta. Ana (Converge).
San Miguel passed on this round.
Taken in the eighth round were Claude Camit (Terrafirma), Kenny Rogers Rocacurva (Northport), JM Galinato (NLEX), and Geremy Robinson (Converge) after Blackwater finally passed.
The remaining draftees were Tristan Medina (Terrafirma), Kint Ariar (Northport), Patrick Ramos (Converge) in the ninth round where NLEX also passed, followed by Franz Diaz (Terrafirma), Rob Nayve (Northport), and Neil Tolentino (Converge) in the 10th.
In the 11th round, Terrafirma and Converge finally had enough, making Ricky Peromingan as the last player to be picked by Northport.
In all, a total of 77 players out of 122 applicants were drafted in the proceedings that lasted until the 12th round when NorthPort finally decided to pass.
According to PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III, the draft comes a close second to the Season 48 proceedings when a total of 79 players were selected and also reached all the way to the 12th round.
