MONTALBAN, Rizal – Barangay Ginebra cruised to a 111-103 win over Terrafirma on Saturday in the PBA 50th Season Commissioner's Cup at the Ynares Center II.
The Gin Kings were never seriously threatened in the game, being up by as many as 27 points to win their third straight game to move up to 5-2 win-loss in a tie with TNT and Meralco at third place in the team standings.
The Gins, now winners of three straight games, had a rousing debut at the Montalban venue which was near capacity.
Justin Brownlee didn't look liked someone who played at the venue for the first time as he finished with 28 points while shooting 11-of-15 from the field including a 5-of-6 clip from threes.
RJ Abarrientos and Stephen Holt had 17 points apiece for the Gin Kings, who dealt the Dyip (3-5) their fifth straight defeat.
The Gin Kings pulled away for good after a 35-21 third quarter with Abarrientos and Holt combining for 20 points, and Holt shooting 4-of-4 from threes in that period. Ginebra eventually led, 102-75, in the fourth, the biggest of the contest.
Terrafirma outscored Barangay Ginebra, 32-20, in the fourth quarter, resulting to a much-closer winning margin.
“I thought we shot the ball really well in the first half but when you shoot the ball that well, you should have a bigger lead than what we did. We wanted to pay attention to the little details throughout the game. I thought, third quarter, we came out and really locked in to the details that keyed our defense and keyed our offense,” said Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone.
“Got a little sloppy in the fourth quarter, and I'm disappointed with that,” he added.
Jerrick Ahanmisi had 27 points on three fours and three threes for Terrafirma.
