BARANGAY Ginebra held its ground in the face of a tough GlobalPort stand to pull off a 111-109 overtime victory in a PBA Governors Cup thriller at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Import Orlando Johnson carried Ginebra for most of regulation and overtime, but it was Mark Caguioa and Japeth Aguilar who emerged heroes when the Kings snatched the all-important win down the stretch.

Caguioa, pulled out of the bench by Ginebra coach Frankie Lim just for the final play, hit a jumper inside the lane to wrest back the lead, 109-108, with 12.3 seconds left in response to an Omar Krayem three-pointer.

On the other hand, Aguilar blocked a three-point attempt by Keith Jensen on the other end, was fouled, and made two free throws to make it 111-108, time down to 5.9 seconds.

“That was big,” Lim said after the game, referring to Aguilar’s defensive gem on Jensen and two free throws in the dying seconds.

“Sabi ko nga sa kanya in my pre-game (talk), it should boil down to the kind of effort you give in the game kasi kung medyo lalamya-lamya tayo, kakainin tayo sa laro,” he added.

Left without a timeout, GlobalPort couldn't set up a last-ditch play and settled for a three-point attempt by import Jarrid Famous, allowing Ginebra to escape with just its third win in seven starts.

Playing in just his third game since recovering from a right hamstring injury, the 6-foot-9 Aguilar finished with a double-double of of 18 points and 13 rebounds, along with four blocks.

Lim also had nice words for new Asian import Jiwan Kim as well as frontliners Dorian Pena and Greg Slaughter.

“It’s all about effort. And malaking bagay din sa amin 'yung pagdating ni Jiwan Kim kasi nagkaroon kami ng additional weapon, plus the effort given by Dorian (Pena) and Greg (Slaughter) to defend Famous. That’s pretty big for us.”
