THE Gilas women’s 3x3 team has tempered expectations even after earning a berth in the main draw of the FIBA Asia Cup in Changsha, China.
Coach Pat Aquino said the Filipina cagebelles will just try to give Asia’s best teams a good fight in the tournament proper that starts on Friday.
“Just happy to be going to the main event,” said Aquino prior to the team playing its first game in Group C. “From there, we’ll do our very best to represent our country.”
Composed of Jack Animam, Afril Bernardino, Janine Pontejos and Clare Castro, the Gilas women’s team qualified for the main tournament after completing a three-game sweep of the Group A qualifier, beating Chinese Taipei, Vanuatu and Samoa.
The Filipinas will play Japan and Sri Lanka in their group, needing to finish in the Top 2 to advance to the crossover knockout stage.
If it reaches the next round, the Gilas women’s team will play the Top 2 teams in Group A composed of China, Australia and New Zealand for a place in the semifinals.
