Gilas protest plan ditched as moot and academic

    Aug 7, 2013

THE victory of Gilas Pilipinas over Hong Kong and Qatar beating Chinese-Taipei at the end of the 27th Fiba-Asia Championship preliminaries made a plan to put the outcome of its match against the Qataris on Tuesday night moot and academic.

Gilas coach Chot Reyes confirmed the team will no longer pursue its planned protest shortly after Gilas clinched the top spot in Group E with a scrambling 67-55 win over Hong Kong at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Earlier, the Philippines tinkered with the idea of putting the result of the Qatar game under protest when veteran point guard Jimmy Alapag signed the score sheet shortly after the team’s 80-70 win.

The team was supposed to question a two-point basket of Mansour Atif Elhadary which was officially counted even after an inadvertent whistle was made by referee Harja Jaladri before the shot in the final 53.4 mark of the game.

Gilas Pilipinas finished in a three-way tie with Chinese Taipei and Qatar on top of Group E with similar 4-1 cards. The tiebreaker was determined through the quotient system, where a point or two in the winning margins involving the three teams could have made a difference.
