GILAS Pilipinas gunner Jeff Chan believes the showdown with the PBA All-Stars won’t be the typical free-wheeling exhibition match as he expects the PBA side not to give an inch on Sunday in the centerpiece event of the All-Star Week at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Chan was named co-All-Star MVP with Arwind Santos in last year’s edition in Digos City, Davao del Sur after burying the buzzer-beating three-point shot as the game ended in a 124-all standoff.
“Loaded sila (All-Star team) ngayon. Saka siyempre, ayaw rin naman nila magpatalo,” Chan shared to Spin.ph, during the press conference on Thursday to open the PBA All-Star Week at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The 6-foot-2 Rain or Shine gunner noted that the All-Star squad to be coached by San Mig’s Tim Cone has enough manpower to keep the nationals on their toes.
He cited the presence of four San Mig players Mark Barroca, two-time league MVP James Yap, Joe Devance and Peter June Simon as a potent combination which Cone could use when he employs his trademark triangle offense.
Chan, however, mentioned that since Gilas’ silver medal finish in last year’s Fiba Asia showpiece, familiarity won’t be a problem anymore.
“Mas fluid na kami ngayon sa takbo ng offense,” said Chan. “Saka malaking bagay din na makalaro na si (Marcus) Douthit saka Jimmy Alapag kasi last year injured pa sila pareho.”
Other members of the All-Star squad this year include Alaska’s Sonny Thoss and Calvin Abueva, Santos and Marcio Lassiter of San Miguel Beer, Ginebra’s trio of Greg Slaughter, Mac Baracael and Chris Ellis, along with Talk ’N Text’s Nino Canaleta.
