Gilas 3x3 misses out on berth in FIBA U23 World Cup

THE Philippines missed out on a spot in the FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup after finishing a decent fourth in the recently concluded FIBA Nations League.

The team of coach Patrick Fran could only muster a total of 390 Tour Points at the conclusion of the six-stop event held in Handan, China.

Powerhouse Mongolia topped the meet with 540 points, but has already been seeded into the World Cup slated from Sept.11 to 15 which it will host in the capital city of Ulaanbataar.

Runner up Japan, with 460 points, claimed the other spot for Asia.

    The Filipinos did top the fifth stop of the tournament to earn 100 points after beating China (20-17) and Japan (20-19) in the group stage, and then Mongolia in the finals (21-12).

    They fell five points short of tying China (395) at third place.

    Kazakshtan (335) and Turkmenistan (310) brought up the rear of the standings.

    The team ended up with a 7-6 record including 2-2 against Japan, 2-0 against both China and Turkmenistan, and it’s only losing record of 1-4 against Mongolia.

    Gilas 3x3 members

    Comprising the 3x3 unit were Noy Remogat from University of the Philippines, Patrick Sleat (University of Perpetual Help), JM Tulabot (University of Perpetual Help), Jun Roque (Letran), Zhed Ettule (San Beda), and Jynno Ladimo (Ateneo).

    Lester Del Rosario served as assistant coach, with Ronnie Magsanoc as team manager.

    Also with the delegation were Migs De Guzman (physical therapist), and Ariel Pilongco (utility staff).

    The team arrived in Manila early Tuesday.

    The Gilas women’s 3x3 team also competed in the same event and finished fourth (380 points) behind China (520), Japan (470) and Mongolia (415).

    The team was composed of Camille Clarin, Kristine Cayabyab, Karl Ann Pingol, and Angelica Marie Surada.
