GEORGE King didn’t mind Calvin Abueva imitating his signature ‘king crown’ celebration in one sequence of the PBA Governors Cup game between San Miguel Beer and Converge.
Instead of getting incensed with Abueva’s actuation, the high-scoring import was even flattered about it.
“We got a saying that imitation is flattering, you know what I mean. And to be in a position where other guys recognize what I do on the court, and take it on within themselves, I’m humbled by it. So thank you,” said King when Spin.ph asked him about Abueva doing his signature act.
The 38-year-old Abueva did his best ‘George King’ imitation at the 9:47 mark of the second quarter after burying a 3 to make it a 39-35 contest in favor of San Miguel.
Shortly after he hit the shot, the veteran forward gestured ‘putting a crown’ on his head just like what King usually does when he made a three-pointer or a four-point shot.
King said he didn’t see Abueva did it.
“Really? I didn’t see it. I miss this one,” he said.
But told about it, he replied: “Ok but that’s good.”
“Honestly, it’s just my celebration and as if though the fans really like it. A lot of people are taking light into it. When I walk around the city and things like that, people recognized me sometimes.”
King celebrated the Beermen’s 126-114 win by scoring his best output in a San Miguel uniform with 46 points, including 16 in the first period.
He added 14 rebounds, six assists, and three steals while shooting 3-of-4 from three-point region.
Like King, Abueva also had a good game for Converge – which lost for the fourth straight time – with a team-high 26 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists, while going 9-of-13 from the field.
The import said he doesn’t take it against players who tries to imitate him, Abueva included.

“Every now and then somebody recognize me and they’ll do the king sign and that started to become like my staple,” he said. “And for sure when other players want to take it on and do it too, no hard feelings man. Go ahead. You know what I mean.
“All the merrier.”
He also later acknowledged Abueva for emulating him.
“Kudos to him. Shout-out to no. 8 for sure,” said King.
