GARY David played down his latest offensive explosion, stressing Meralco simply has to get better on the defensive end to finally get a win in the PBA Philippine Cup.
The Bolts gunner flashed his vintage form on Sunday when he fired a league-season-high 40 points on 14-of-21 shooting, including 7-of-9 triples and 5-of-5 free throws – a production that still proved insufficient as his team lost to Barako Bull, 106-108, to remain winless in four games.
“Kahit anong gawin natin, medyo hindi pa rin (nagreresulta ng panalo), kaya kailangan namin mag-focus sa ibang depertamento muna,” David said after the game. “I trust the coaching staff na makikita nila yung bagay na kailangan namin: yung defense talaga.”
“Yung confidence namin sa offense, nandun naman, pero hindi naman sapat 'yun, so kailangan double effort on defense,” he added.
While they shot a superb 51 percent (41-of-80) from the field, the Bolts also allowed the Energy to make 40 of their 81 shots for a solid 49 percent clip.
“Hindi mo rin matawaran yung capability ng Barako,” David said. “Deserving sila.”
Still, it was a noteworthy offensive night for the man they call “El Granada” as he registered his best scoring output in three seasons.
“Sa akin lang naman, every game, binibigay ko lang best ko maglaro,” the 37-year-old David said. “Credit ko rin sa teammates ko: they look for me and give me good screens.”
“Unluckily kulang pa, siguro kailangan ng forty-three points para manalo,” the Gilas Pilipinas standout concluded with a smile.
