Veteran Gary David feels it's never too late to win an elusive Three-Point Shootout title

    Apr 27, 2017

LUCENA - Always a bridesmaid but never a bride.

Veteran Gary David never got the bragging rights as Three-Point shootout champion in the four times he competed in the side event of the PBA All-Star spectacle featuring the league's top long-range bombers.

The closest he made it to the top was runner-up finishes behind Dondon Hontiveros (2007 Baguio) and James Yap (2009 Manila).

While his stroke may not be as accurate as it was before, David is making another attempt to win the honor - belated as it may be - as he sees action in Friday's shootfest at the Quezon Convention Center.

He doesn't mind the greater odds stacked against him, with two-time champion Terrence Romeo looming as the fancied bet to bring home his crown.

For David, 38 years and all, just being in the company of some of the top PBA gunners is more than enough.

"Enjoy lang natin," he said of his thoughts about the competition on the way to the capital city of Quezon Province Thursday. "Malay mo."

David is the most senior in the 12-man field, having joined his first three-point shootout back when Romeo was still in high school at Letran.

"Lagi lang ako sa finals" he said of his early stint in the contest.

David last joined the shooout during the 2014 edition at the Mall of Asia Arena. Unfortunately, he failed to get past the eliminations of the meet won by Mark Macapagal.

Although expectations are not really high on his part, the Mahindra shòoting guard said he still prepared for it by constantly practicing in the gym.

"Kailangan pa rin. Importante kasi diyan yung timing," he said.

Completing the cast are Allein Maliksi, rookie Matthew Wright, LA Tenorio, Juami Tiongson, Marcio Lassiter, Maverick Ahanmisi, Simon Enciso, Jared Dillinger, Ronjay Buenafe, and Larry Fonacier.
