GARVO Lanete is taking the latest trade involving him in a positive light.

Although a bit surprised that Meralco shipped him to NorthPort just two days after the PBA 44th season opened, Lanete is optimistic about a new beginning with the Batang Pier.

“I think it’s a better opportunity naman for me. I’m happy to be with NorthPort and nakausap ko naman sila coach (Pido Jarencio) na ang sabi naman nila sa akin makakalaro ako dito,” said the four-year guard on Wednesday after the Batang Pier won their season debut, 117-91, against the Blackwater Elite.

Lanete failed to suit up for the game as he has yet to practice with NorthPort. The trade was only consummated on Tuesday as Lanete landed with the Batang Pier in exchange for the team’s 2020 second-round pick.

“Wala pa (akong practice), kaya hindi pa ako naglaro ngayon,” he said. “I’m glad na nanalo kami ngayon, so it’s a welcome win for me.”

Since the trade came on short notice, Lanete failed to say higoodbye to the Bolts. He did seek out some of them at the Smart Araneta Coliseum prior to Meralco’s game against Phoenix also on Wednesday.

“Nag group message na lang ako sa kanila. Nakita ko yung mga ibang players kanina. Nami-miss daw nila ako,” said Lanete with a smile.

The feeling is mutual, according to him.

“Nakaka-miss siyempre,” said the younger brother of San Miguel Beer veteran Chico Lanete. “Yun ang mahirap kapag nate-trade ka, yung relationship mo sa teammates mo, yung relationship mo sa coaches, sa management, I think for me yun ang pinaka mahirap doon.”

But Lanete is ready to move on and the Batang Pier are helping him feel at home and get adjusted to the team’s system.

The 29-year-old native of Ormoc, Leyte is set to make his NorthPort debut on Sunday, ironically against NLEX, another former team which selected Lanete in the first round (sixth overall) during the 2015 draft.
