GARVO Lanete was on fire for NorthPort in Game One of the PBA Governors’ Cup semifinals against Barangay Ginebra, scoring 24 points in the lopsided win on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Lanete hit six of his nine triples, all of which coming in the second half as the Batang Pier routed the Gin Kings, 124-90, to draw first blood of the best-of-five semifinal series.
Lanete is glad that his top-notch performance finally led to a win.
“Best game as a winner,” said Lanete. “May mga games ako na maganda before tapos natatalo so I think eto ‘yung masasabi ko na best game ko.”
Lanete had 21 points in the final quarter including a three that put NorthPort up, 122-85, the biggest lead in the match. The former San Beda even looked surprised with his three-point performance.
“’Yun din sinasabi ko sa mga teammates ko. Can’t believe na 24 points na pala ako. I hope to be consistent. Whatever minutes I play in this team, as long as makakatulong ako,” said Lanete.
Lanete on Saturday proved that he can be depended on by head coach Pido Jarencio when it comes to offense even though Game One was only his fourth game this conference that he scored in double figures.
Lanete said he never loses confidence with NorthPort even though there are times he is being used sparingly by Jarencio.
“Grabe si coach Pido na magbigay ng kumpiyansa sa akin kahit lagi niya akong minumura,” said Lanete. “Lagi niya akong minumura pero hindi nawawala kumpiyansa ko kasi kapag minumura ka niya, maya-maya, magbibiro sayo. Kaya ‘yung kumpiyansa mo, tumataas.”
Lanete said the role of the bench players like himself will play a key factor in the series.
“We want to help our Big Three namin, sila Michael (Qualls), Sean (Anthony), at Christian (Standhardinger). Kailangan naming mag-step up eh, that’s why kaming mga bench, ready lang dapat kami,” said Lanete.
Lanete and NorthPort know that the Game One will not decide the series, as the team expects Barangay Ginebra to make adjustments in order to tie the semifinal affair.
“I think we played really good defensively. Nag-work ‘yung game plan namin. We have to prepare for the next game kasi grabe mag-adjust ‘yung Ginebra. We have to be ready,” said Lanete.
