GARVO Lanete finally broke the jinx of playing against Chico Lanete as the former had the last laugh against his older brother in Meralco’s 107-104 win over Phoenix in their PBA Governors’ Cup matchup on Friday night.

The younger Garvo knocked down some of the biggest baskets down the stretch and six triples overall as he ended up putting up a new career high of 27 points, along with four rebounds, and two assists in 35 minutes.

And the sophomore gunner did that while the 38-year-old Chico was helpless on the Phoenix bench all throughout the game.

“I never played well against my brother's team ever since eh,” the 28-year-old Garvo admitted. “So I'm glad na it paid off well... We were glad na nanalo kami.”

The last time the brothers met was in the Philippine Cup eliminations when Lanete scored just six points on 2-of-9 shooting, four boards, and one assist, against two turnovers in 24 minutes in a loss to his older brother and Phoenix.

Now, Garvo finally played well against his older brother as he rose to the occasion in the absence of playmakers Baser Amer and Mike Tolomia, and injured Cliff Hodge.

“We really needed to step up,” Lanete, coming off a scoreless outing against former team NLEX, said. “Zero ako nung last game against NLEX so there's no way na maging ganun ulit yung game ko. I'm glad na everyone stepped up.”

Lanete made sure he wouldn’t disappoint this time as he got some shots up as early as three hours before tipoff.

“One o'clock pa lang nandito na 'ko nagshu-shooting na 'ko,” the former San Beda star said. “Buti na lang it paid off.”

Lanete, though, had to wait a little while before heating up in the third quarter where he fired 14 of his output.

“Sabi nila coach basta just keep shooting even if you're missing,” Lanete said. “Nung first quarter miss ako ng miss eh, so I was like 'ok, I'll just keep shooting even if I miss' kasi wala namang ibang titira eh. Buti na lang pumapasok na nung second half yung mga tira ko.”
