GILAS cadet Garvo Lanete has decided to skip the PBA Annual Rookie Draft, citing the “need to polish his game further" through more competitions overseas.
Lanete, the 6-foot-1 sharpshooter out of San Beda, broke his silence by announcing to the media that he will not join Gilas and NLEX teammates Kevin Alas, Matt Ganuelas, Jake Pascual, and Ronald Pascual in the rookie pool for the August 24 draft.
“Hindi muna ako magpapa-draft this year kasi feeling ko, may kulang pa sa laro ko, so I want to improve more,” Lanete said on Wednesday, hours before the rookie draft’s deadline.
The 25-year-old younger brother of San Miguel Beer guard Chico also said the deep roster of guards and forwards in the current pool played in his decision to pass up on the draft.
By staying another year with the national pool, Lanete said he hopes to greatly improve his skills.
“By playing sa international competitions, iba yung nabibigay na confidence sa akin, kaya I decided to continue working on my game first to prepare myself better for next year’s draft,” he added.
Lanete averaged a team-best 17.0 points for NLEX this past season, leading the Road Warriors to their sixth PBA D-League championship in the Foundation Cup last June.
