CALOY Garcia plans to use an all-Purefoods line-up when he coaches the South in the PBA All-Star Game on March 31 in Calasiao, Pangasinan.
The Rain or Shine coach will be coaching the South All-Stars after the Elastopainters finished second after the cut-off date of March 10 in the PBA Philippine Cup.
This early, Garcia is already drawing up plans of all former and current players of the Purefoods franchise playing at the same time.
Aside from current Magnolia cagers Mark Barroca, Jio Jalalon, and PJ Simon and ex-Purefoods players James Yap and Joe Devance, franchise legends Alvin Patrimonio and Jerry Codinera will also be joining the team to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the PBA All-Star Game.
“It’s basically for the fans,” said Garcia. “As much as possible, we’ll try to get them in. I’m already thinking ahead. Sabi ko, puwedeng isabay limang Purefoods. Jerry, Alvin, Barroca, James, and Peter. Puwede isabay ‘yun. I think it’s something to look into.”
Yap, a two-time Most Valuable Player awardee with the Purefoods franchise, is currently playing for Garcia with Rain or Shine. Yap's play is also one of the reasons why Garcia will be coaching in the All-Star Game, his first in his career.
He was an assistant coach when then-Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao led the North All-Stars to a 154-151 win over the South All-Stars at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Garcia is excited to coach in the All-Star Game especially with the legends participating.
“It’s always a good experience to be part of the All-Star. Sa South ako, kasama ko si Alvin and Jerry. Nung bata ako, pinapanood ko sila,” Garcia said.
“Ngayon, puwede ko silang pagalitan. Papractice ko kung puwede silang pagalitan,” said Garcia in jest.
Garcia also plans to pull off surprises.
“Malay natin, si June Mar (Fajardo), magbaba ng bola,” said Garcia.
