May 3, 2019

MERALCO has signed Gani Lawal as its reinforcement for the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup.

Team manager Paolo Trillo confirmed the news on Friday.

Lawal is a 6-foot-9 slotman out of Georgia Tech and was picked 46th overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 2010 NBA Draft.

The 30-year-old Nigerian American has been well-travelled all over the world, having stops in Poland, China, France, Italy, Turkey, Greece, United Arab Emirates, Spain, Iran, and Argentina.

Lawal last played for Shiga Lakestars in the Japanese B.League, averaging 21.0 points and 12.2 rebounds in 42 games.

He is expected to bolster the Bolts frontline which relied mostly on Reynel Hugnatan, Ranidel de Ocampo, Nino Canaleta, and Bryan Faundo.

Meralco is looking to bounce back from an 11th place finish in the 2019 Philippine Cup where the team struggled with a 3-8 record.
