SAN Miguel coach Jorge Gallent is giving Quincy Miller a pass after a rough shooting night in their EASL 2024-25 season opener on Wednesday.

Miller had eight points but was 2-of-12 from the field in San Miguel’s 87-81 defeat against Korean side Suwon KT Sonicboom at the Mall of Asia Arena. The former PBA import only shot 1-of-8 from twos, and 1-of-4 from threes, while also dealing with foul trouble.

Since he is not the import of the Beermen in the PBA, Miller played his first official game with San Miguel on Wednesday.

Gallent said Miller has been showing the effort for Beermen in the lead-up for the EASL, and even in the game against Suwon KT, so his first game isn’t a reflection of how he will play in the succeeding games.

“Quincy has been practicing and practicing hard,” said Gallent. “Everybody has a bad game. But Quincy is playing hard.”

Miller showed effort as he grabbed five rebounds and three blocks, while also dishing out three assists. Gallent is confident that in the next games, Miller’s shots will eventually fall.

“Everybody has bad days. But he has been shooting in practicing. He has been lifting weights and he is practicing hard coming into this game,” said Gallent.

Even with Miller’s struggles, the Beermen actually shot better by draining 46.67 percent from the field, unlike Sonicboom where they only hit 41.77 percent.

For Gallent, San Miguel lost because Suwon KT had better effort, as shown in the 17-7 discrepancy in the offensive rebounds.

“The game was kind of tight until the fourth quarter but they were just hitting their shots coming from offensive rebounds. We lost 10 offensive rebounds, and they converted half of that," he said.

"That turned the game around. I saw three or four offensive rebounds that turned into two putbacks and one three-point shot. I think that was the crucial thing that’s why we lost the game."
