If Gabe Norwood practices what he studied, he'll have very interesting article to write about Yeng Guiao

GABE Norwood usually sees his name on the sports pages of newspapers and websites as one of the subjects of sports scribes.

But the Rain or Shine and Gilas Pilipinas utility player once thought of being on the other side of the fence, covering and writing out athletes and their exploits.

Unknown to many, Norwood took up and finished a Communications course that majored in Journalism at George Mason University where he played college ball.

So that explains why the Filipino-American cager, taking over the PBA's Twitter account on Tuesday, answered “coach or sportswriter” when asked by a fan on what his career alternatives were had he not become a pro player.

“My dad’s been a college football coach since I was a kid, so I’ve always been around coaching, but I wanted something new,” Norwood expounded later. “And I subscribed to Sports Illustrated, Slam, ESPN The Mag, and all that when I was a kid.”

“I just want to be around the sport,” he added. “In college, I was never the star player, so I didn’t know where my career was going to go, but I knew I wanted to be around the game.”

The 31-year-old Norwood, who has an aunt on his dad’s side who used to be a sportswriter for the Washington Post, once wrote a column for Slam Philippines when the local counterpart started publishing in the country a few years ago, and also tried blogging for a while.

“It kind of faded away as I focused on basketball,” said the versatile 6-foot-5 point forward, a former Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, and a two-time Fiba Asia Championship silver medalist. “But we’ll see what happens. You never know.”

“I might come and sit down and intern with you, guys,” he was quick to add with a smile. “I’ll try to take advantage of the four years in college that I did, might as well put it to good use.”

If he does, Norwood already has one interesting subject in mind: the ever-outspoken ROS coach Yeng Guiao.

“I have some backlogs. I definitely have some stories,” he chuckled. “I could start a book or something.”
