THE Games and Amusements Board (GAB) maintained that Calvin Abueva needs to undergo a seminar on Conduct and Ethical Standards of a pro athlete before being granted his professional playing license.
GAB chairman Abraham Mitra said it was made clear to the 32-year-old forward that he needs to attend the session in order to be issued a new license once the PBA decides to lift an indefinite suspension that has stretched for 15 months.
Abueva went to the GAB office on Tuesday afternoon, accompanied by Phoenix coach Topex Robinson to apply for a new license - just hours after a meeting with PBA commissioner Willie Marcial.
Mitra was not around as he attended the Senate budget hearings, delegating the task instead to GAB commissioner Eduard Trinidad.
“He (Trinidad) did not commit anything and said that his (Abueva) request will be discussed and decided upon by the board in its next meeting,” said the GAB chief.
Mitra said the seminar could be done via Zoom.
Time is also of the essence as Abueva needs to process his license if he’s going to be finally allowed by the league to suit up for the Fuel Masters. He was allowed to join the team inside the bubble and play in scrimmages.
“Kapag wala siya nun (license), kahit maupo lang siya sa bench hindi allowed, lalo na maglaro,” said Mitra.
"A license is a privilege, not a right and it can be revoked anytime for unprofessional or unsportsmanlike behavior," added the GAB chief.
The league will allow late entries – especially those who are rehabbing for injuries – until October 10 to make it to the bubble. Those arriving after the cut-off will no longer be entertained.
