DESPITE officially being named head coach of Globalport, Franz Pumaren isn’t about to abandon what he had successfully started with Adamson this season.
Pumaren emphatically said he’ll remain with the Falcons after clinching his first win in the PBA in two years as coach on Friday following the Batang Pier’s 97-75 crushing of the Mahindra Floodbuster in the Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“I’m still part of the program of Adamson,” stressed the veteran coach, who steered the Falcons to the UAAP men’s basketball Final Four this season after a five-year absence.
“I still have a goal with Adamson, the same thing here with Globalport.”
Pumaren initially served as team consultant of the Batang Pier during the time Season 79 of the UAAP had yet to commence.
But following the ouster of the Falcons by top seed La Salle Green Archers in the semis, management of Globalport didn’t see any hindrance to formally naming Pumaren as head coach despite the existing PBA rule prohibiting league coaches from handling another team in college.
Besides, the decision was both acceptable for Globalport and Adamson.
“Right now UAAP just ended, so I don’t see any conflict with that,” Pumaren stressed.
Globalport alternate governor Eric Arejola said the team's management is grateful to Adamson for allowing Pumaren to handle the Batang Pier coaching duties shortly after the UAAP season.
“We would like to thank Adamson for allowing Franz (Pumaren) to handle the team,” said Arejola, who is also an executive of AirAsia. “We hope Franz can achieve what he had just accomplished for Adamson in the UAAP.”
At the same time, Pumaren admitted he can’t say no to Globalport owner and current PBA chairman Mikee Romero.
“It’s so hard to say no if the one requesting you to coach is your kumpadre (Mikee Romero). Not only a kumpare but also a good friend,” he said. “I’m here to help out, to have a good run here also at Globalport.”
“Give than scenario when a good friend asks help from you, then it’s hard to say no.”
Pumaren, 52, replaced Johnedel Cardel who is now his top deputy.
