ALASKA'S flamboyant forward Calvin Abueva admits the pressure to deliver is taking its toll on him in the PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup following a sensational rookie season.
The 6-foot-1 Abueva was nowhere near as effective and, worse, went into foul trouble in five of his first six games this season, keeping him out of the Aces’ rotation for most of the stretch run.
“Siguro masyado lang na-pe-pressure. Pero ngayon bumabalik-balik na rin. Tumataas na rin kumpiyansa natin,” Abueva bared to Spin.ph, shortly after the Aces’ practice at the Gatorade Hoops Center on Tuesday.
They Said It!
“Siyempre, di lang naman pressure sa mga fans ko, pero sa mga teammates ko din. Minsan may problema na di naso-solusyonan, so kailangan bawiin ang last few games na bad start at bad season namin." - 2013 Rookie of the Year and Alaska forward Calvin Abueva
Abueva missed the team’s last outing due to a sprained left ankle. Without him, the Aces fell to the rampaging Globalport Batang Pier, 84-94, and dropped to a 2-5 (win-loss) slate.
The 25-year-old Alaska wingman hinted at some “problems” he had early this season, though he declined to elaborate.
“Siyempre, di lang naman pressure sa mga fans ko, pero sa mga teammates ko din. Minsan may problema na di naso-solusyonan, so kailangan bawiin ang last few games na bad start at bad season namin,” he said.
“Gusto naming mag-grow, saka ma-improve pa teamwork namin.”
Abueva's season averages aren't too bad - 12.1 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists - but he has struggled to stay out of foul trouble, averaging 5.3 fouls per contest.
While he finished in double figures during his last three games, he was quick to add his solid performance won't guarantee an Alaska victory unless the whole team steps up.
“Depende rin, kasi kung ako lang, di ko mabubuhat ang team ko. Kailangan lahat kami pumuputok. Mas importante `yung teamwork para mas gumanda laro namin,” said Abueva.
