ONE of the most popular players ever of Barangay Ginebra is set for a coaching return when ATC Healthcare makes its PBA D-League debut next conference.

Team head coach Rodney Santos confirmed to Spin.ph that Bal David will be part of Liver Marin team’s coaching staff in the Foundation Cup that kicks off next month.

The stint serves as David’s coaching comeback after last handling the Fern-C franchise in the defunct Philippine Basketball League in 2010.

Known as ‘The Flash,' David played for Ginebra during the era of Robert Jaworski Sr. in the late 90s. He retired in 2005 due to nagging injuries, ending a 10-year pro career, all spent with the San Miguel-owned ballclub.

David is the latest former Ginebra player who had ventured into coaching.

Marlou Aquino and Vince Hizon currently serve as assistant coaches of Adamson in the UAAP following their PBA career.

Santos, a former Ginebra cager himself, will have David in the coaching staff together with another ex-Ginebra teammate in Banjo Calpito and Junel Mendiola.

Although David already has some coaching experience, Santos admitted the ex-Ginebra guard is still adjusting to his job as deputy mentor in their first month in the team.

“Sa kanya, medyo naninibago pa siya dahil iba pa rin ‘yung naglalaro sa nagtuturo,” said Santos, an assistant coach with San Sebastian last year. “Sabi ko sa kanya, i-feel niya muna habang ako muna ‘yung nagpapatakbo ng practice. Tulung-tulong lang kami.”

Liver Marin will be having a school tie-up with San Sebastian, with six Stag players joining the team.

David is best remembered for two buzzer-beating shots during his playing days with Ginebra - one of them was his memorable half-court heave at the buzzer as Ginebra beat San Miguel Beer in 1997.

The former University of Santo Tomas guard also scored the epic game-winning jumper as the eight-seeded Gins eliminated Asi Taulava and top seed Mobiline in the 1999 All-Filipino Cup quarterfinals.
