IT didn't take long for Luigi Trillo to return to coaching.
Just two months after getting fired as Alaska coach, Trillo is back in the game as an assistant coach of Meralco under Norman Black, the coach confirmed to Spin.ph on Friday night.
Trillo is the reigning Coach of the Year after leading Alaska to the Commissioner's Cup last season, but a tailspin that saw the Aces miss out on the semifinals in the three succeeding conferences cost him his job.
He was replaced by former assistant Alex Campton two games into the Aces' campaign in the Governors Cup, where the Aces got as far as the semifinals but wasted a 2-1 series lead over Rain or Shine.
At Meralco, Trillo will join Ronnie Magsanoc, Patrick Fran, Gene Afable and Xavy Nunag as the assistant coaches of Black, who moved from Talk 'N Text to replace Ryan Gregorio at Meralco following the shuffle of coaches among the teams under the MVP umbrella.
He will also be reunited with brother Paolo Trillo, who is Meralco team manager.
A source who initially confirmed the deal said Trillo will be taking the final spot in the coaching staff vacated by Nash Racela, who moved back to Talk 'N Text to join Jong Uichico as part of the shuffle.
In an interview, Trillo said he's excited to buckle down to work at Meralco but insisted that it is Magsanoc who will be the first assistant of Black next season.
After weeks away from the limelight, Trillo returned as an analyst in the league's broadcast team but made it clear his passion is coaching.
“A lot of good coaches have done it (broadcasting) but it’s not bad to stay with the game. I love commentary but my passion is coaching,” said Trillo.
