ALASKA finally awoke from its long slumber, ending its dreaded 14-game losing run in grandiose fashion after blasting the struggling San Miguel Beer, 90-79 , in the PBA Governor's Cup, Saturday night at the AUF Gym in Pampanga.
The victory couldn't have come at a better time for the Aces as they took their firsr win in the season-ending conference after seven tries.
Buck Henton proved that he's still the right man for the job as the Aces' reinforcement after posting 36 points and 15 rebounds to lead Alaska, which hasn't won a game since April 2.
The Aces regained their defensive teeth, evident when they limited the Beermen to just nine points in the first quarter to jump to a 19-9 lead.
Behind the stellar play of Arwind Santos, the Beermen were able to trim the lead to three points in the third quarter before the Aces tore the game wide open anew.
Henton conspired with JV Casio and Calvin Abueva to regain control of the game. Then a three pointer by Casio and free throws from Henton finished the game off for good as the Aces took an 85-69 lead with 2:09 to go.
Abueva finished with a near double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds to support Henton's explosion as Sonny Thoss added 12.
Santos had a stellar outing in front of his kababayans, finishing with a team-high 29 points and nine rebounds off the bench as June Mar Fajardo added 12 markers and 14 boards.
New import Terik Bridgeman bombed for San Miguel, however, as he was limited to just two points on 1-4 shooting in 21 minutes. He also had six turnovers.
The loss was the second straight defeat for the grand slam-seeking San Miguel as the Beermen dropped to 3-3.
