ANTIPOLO –Joe Devance again sported a new look, but provided the same steady play in his return for Ginebra in a 90-89 win over Meralco in their PBA Commissioner’s Cup matchup on Sunday night.
After sporting cornrows two games back against San Miguel Beer, the veteran forward showed up at the Ynares Center with a new hairdo that looked like a flattened afro bush.
“I call it the ‘Joe Special,’” Devance said with a smile after the game. “You never know what’s going to be next. You guys like it? Okay good.”
The new look seemed to bring good fortune as the 35-year-old cager scored the putback off an LA Tenorio missed triple that put the Gin Kings up for good at 88-86, getting the offensive board over adept-rebounding teammates in Scottie Thompson and Japeth Aguilar.
It sure didn’t look like Devance didn’t practice all week after being confined in a hospital for four days due to a throat infection.
“I didn’t practice one time this whole week, so I didn’t know how I was going to play; I didn’t know how my wind was going to be. But luckily, I was able to fight through it, and we got the win,” Devance said. “So that’s all that matters.”
The 10-year-veteran was even healthy enough to start the game as he finished with six points on 3-of-6 shooting, six boards, and six assists in 28 minutes.
Thanks to his heroics, the Gin Kings have tied Star atop the standings with an 8-2 win-loss record.
“We have a chance at the number one or two seed, so we’ll see what happens when playoffs hits,” Devance said.
