BARANGAY Ginebra has split its first two games of the preseason so far, but one thing that stands out is the splendid play of big man Japeth Aguilar.
The Gilas Pilipinas standout is looking good after recovering from an MCL injury that marred his first conference with Ginebra in the last Governors Cup, scoring 28 points in a 93-100 loss to Air21 on Friday.
Counting his 21 points in a win over Rain or Shine, the high-leaping power forward from Pampanga has averaged 24.5 points in the two games that he has played in the preseason so far.
“Okay naman si Japeth. Nako-confuse lang siya nung una dahil bago pa lang siya before. Nung nakaraan kasi (Governors Cup), three games lang nilaro niya," said Ginebra coach Ato Agustin.
Aguilar is expected to shine in his first full season with Ginebra, more so since the arrival of top rookie pick Greg Slaughter will allow him to slide down to his favored power forward spot.
Agustin admits Ginebra is now deep in every spot going to the new season but said a lot more work needs to be done to live up to the fans' high expectations.
“Ngayon, mahaba ang preparation namin. Pero marami pa kaming kailangang i-improve. At ang dapat pa ma-improve eh yung defense talaga kasi nanalo kami sa Rain or Shine because of our defense,” Agustin said.
