SOMETIMES, it’s really better to hit the ground running.
Garvo Lanete proved this on Friday night when he started in his first game back from an injury – and only his second game ever for Meralco – as he delivered in the team’s 107-78 win over Blackwater at the start of their PBA Governors’ Cup campaign.
Acquired in a trade in the latter part of the Commissioner’s Cup, the sophomore gunner returned from a calf injury and made an immediate impact with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from three-point distance, three boards, one assist, one block, and zero turnovers in almost 24 minutes.
Lanete, though, admitted he wasn’t surprised to get the starting job from coach Norman Black after playing admirably in their tune-up games in the preseason.
“Hindi (surprised) kasi nung tune-up, ini-istart na niya ako, maganda naman nilaro ko nung tune-up kaya ayun siguro dahil dun sa tune-up games na yun,” the 28-year-old cager said.
Lanete made his presence felt in the second quarter where he took over with nine points after Baser Amer sparked the blowout with also nine points in the opening period as the fellow San Beda products led the balanced attack that saw six players scoring in double figures.
“Very unselfish basketball yung laro namin kanina, obvious naman na madami kaming assist, hinanap talaga ako ng mga teammates ko,” Lanete said. “So sana tuloy-tuloy yung ganung laro namin and hopefully magawa din namin yun Sunday against Ginebra.”
Personally, Lanete is hoping that this is a sign of things to come.
“Oo, siyempre masaya din ako kasi maganda yung first game ko sa kanila,” the former NLEX player said. “Then, sana consistent lang yung ganung laro ko, and ano naman sila maayos talaga mga teammates ko kasi kinakausap nila ako lagi, sinasabi nila na hahanapin ka namin, don't worry about it. Yun winelcome naman nila ako sa team.”
Lanete is just glad to fill in the Bolts’ lack of a shooter.
“I had to make my shots, lalo pag libre and hopefully ganun, tuloy-tuloy lang laro ko kasi the past few conferences di ako makabwelo-bwelo dahil sa injury ko,” Lanete said. “I just hope na maging healthy ako all throughout the conference na to and the next few conferences.”
