A FIRST-TIME MVP will be named on Sunday as the PBA hands out individual awards for the best of the 46th Season of the league during The Leo Awards at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The festivities are set at 2 p.m. right before the formal opening of Season 47 of the league at the Big Dome.
Scottie Thompson of Barangay Ginebra, Mikey Williams of TNT, Calvin Abueva of Magnolia, and Robert Bolick of NorthPort are the candidates for the MVP plum that will be given again after a year's absence due to the shortened season in 2020.
Whoever wins, it will be a first-time MVP.
Thompson was coming off a banner season for Barangay Ginebra where he won the Best Player of the Conference and Finals MVP during the Governors’ Cup where the Gins ruled the conference.
Williams was also a champion in 2021 and bagged the Finals MVP trophy in the Philippine Cup. The 30-year-old guard is looking to become the second rookie MVP in the league since Benjie Paras did it in 1989.
Scottie Thompson was Governors' Cup Best Player of the Conference.
Abueva also had a solid year when he clinched the Best Player of the Conference plum during the Philippine Cup, leading Magnolia to a runner-up finish in the Philippine Cup.
Bolick is also a noteworthy candidate after being one of the statistical leaders all season long, following a long layoff from an ACL injury in his rookie year.
The PBA will also name its Season 46 Mythical Team, Rookie of the Year, Most Improved Player, All-Defensive Team, and the Samboy Lim Sportsmanship Awardee.
