Gary David keeps mum as cruel twist of fate denies him shot at first-ever PBA title

LADY Luck continued to frown on Gary David, whose shot at a first-ever PBA championship remained elusive after San Miguel Beer bowed out from the Governors’ Cup on Tuesday night.

After his signing with the powerhouse Beermen in the Commissioner’s Cup revived his title bid, the veteran shooting guard came up empty handed anew as the heavy favorites failed to get past the semifinals for the second straight conference, knocked out of contention by Ginebra.

To make matters worse for the 12-year veteran, he saw his former team Meralco make the finals for the first time in franchise history after ousting top seed TNT Katropa a day earlier.

It was easy to feel bad for David, who was teary eyed as he politely declined an interview after emerging from the dugout following SMB’s 117-92 loss in the deciding game of the best-of-five series.

David, a former scoring champion, also rarely saw daylight in SMB coach Leo Austria's rotation. But he made the most of his surprise appearance in Game Five, scoring all his seven points in the fourth quarter that nonetheless proved a little too late.
