Final PBA Philippine Cup elims playdate offers intriguing possibilities for Kings

Final PBA eliminations playdate offers intriguing possibilities for Kings

    by the numbers

FROM 16 scenarios prior to last Friday’s games, only four remain with only two games left in the elimination round of the 2012-13 PBA Philippine Cup.

San Mig Coffee takes on Meralco while two time defending champion Talk ‘N Text battles Barangay Ginebra San Miguel to close out the elims at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday.

Globalport and Barako Bull have already been eliminated and the eight remaining teams advance to the playoffs.

Two quarterfinal pairings have already been set in stone: the No. 1 seed Tropang Texters against No. 8 Air21 and the second-seeded Mixers taking on No. 7 Petron Blaze.

These two series begin on Thursday, December 13, at the MOA Arena with Talk ‘N Text and San Mig Coffee needing to win just once over their respective rivals to advance to the best-of-seven semifinals, though not against each other.

Rain or Shine is already assured of the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. Only the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 rankings have yet to be determined.

Sunday’s games are non-bearing as far as the Tropang Texters and the Mixers are concerned.

But not for Meralco and Barangay Ginebra.

If the Bolts win over San Mig Coffee, they will finish the elims as No. 4 and forge a best-of-three quarterfinal against No. 5 Alaska. If Meralco loses, it will still face Alaska if Talk ‘N Text beats Ginebra in the second game. If the Bolts lose and Ginebra wins, Meralco takes on Rain or Shine instead.

The interesting part is if San Mig Coffee beats Meralco, Barangay Ginebra can actually “choose” which opponent to face in the other best-of-three quarterfinal.

If the Mixers win and the Kings lose, it will be Rain or Shine and Barangay Ginebra in the other best-of-three. If both San Mig Coffee and the Kings win, it will be Ginebra against Alaska.

Aside from “choosing” a quarterfinal opponent, the Kings can also opt for which potential semifinal opponent it wants. The format has the winner of the No. 1 vs. No. 8 series taking on the winner of the No. 4 against No. 5 , so its 3-vs-6 winner vs. 2-vs-7 winner in the other semis.

But knowing the Ginebra organization, I’m pretty sure they’d want to end the elims with a win and take on any opponent that comes its way in the playoffs.

Besides, aren't we all familiar with the saying, 'be careful what you wish for.'

Here the last four scenarios with the resulting rankings and corresponding point-differentials and PBA quotients in case of ties:
