RAMON Fernandez will be coaching Purefoods in their ‘Return of the Rivals’ exhibition match against Barangay Ginebra on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Fernandez will be at the bench on Sunday for Purefoods, a team he coached during the 1988 season, in the exhibition match organized by UNTV and the PBA Legends Foundation Inc.
The match isbeing held to raise funds for less fortunate former PBA players.
“I’m excited to see the guys again and I’m happy that the basketball fans can at least reminisce those years,” said Fernandez, currently the commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission.
Incidentally, Fernandez, a four-time Most Valuable Player, will be coaching against Robert Jaworski, who will be at the sidelines for Barangay Ginebra. Fernandez and Jaworski were once teammates with Toyota in the early days of the PBA.
When asked about strategies against Jaworski, Fernandez said Sunday’s match will be all about fun.
“It’s a fashion show, pagandahan ng dala ng uniform. Puting buhok sa puting buhok, at ubusan ng buhok,” said Fernandez in jest.
Turning serious, Fernandez said he is glad to contribute to help his former colleagues in raising funds in a noble cause.
“We are able to raise funds to help our former colleagues that need assistance with their medical requirements,” said Fernandez.
