JAMES Yap played inspired ball on Father’s Day as he helped lift defending PBA Governors Cup champion Star Hotshots to an emphatic 117-89 win over Barako Bull.
For the two-time league MVP though, the celebration came four days earlier.
The superstar player bared he observed Father’s Day with TV star son Bimby last Wednesday as the two of them had a grand time chatting over dinner at a place he’d rather not disclose.
“Masaya dahil matagal din kaming hindi nagkita,” said the 33-year-old Yap about his meeting with his son with TV host and actress Kris Aquino. “Siyempre may ilangan, pero ang mahalaga nagka-bonding kami.”
Bimby gifted his father with an Iron Man shirt, which James was wearing proudly shortly after the Hotshots’ game against the Energy.
“Itong shirt na ito bigay niya,” he said.
In turn, James gifted his son with a pair of Iron Man socks.
“Timing nga e,” Yap said. “Nagustuhan niya naman.”
James admitted he wants to spend longer bonding time with Bimby, who, not surprisingly, is also into basketball now.
“Siyempre gusto ko bonding talaga as in bonding. Kaso may oras lang kasi. So kung ano yung oras na binigay sa akin, kailangan mo na lang ‘yung focus, yung effort na maging close kayong dalawa,” added Yap.
The Star franchise player said if he has the time, he’ll personally teach Bimby the rudiments of the game, and perhaps, some of the moves that made him one of the biggest players to have suited up in Asia’s first ever play-for-pay league.
“Ang tangkad niya na. Kung may time tuturuan ko siya,” he said.
Too bad Bimby wasn’t around at the Smart Araneta Coliseum to see his dad torch the Energy for 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range.
Yap also had eight rebounds and two assists.
“James has been shooting well in practices, but he hasn’t just translated it on game night,” said Star coach Tim Cone.
“But if you talk to his teammates, he’s been killing them in practice. He can shoot the ball really, really well. So I’m not surprised tonight by how well he shot the ball.”
