FATHER and son cut their family ties for one night as NLEX and Phoenix lock horns on Sunday when the PBA Philippine Cup resumes at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Fuel Masters coach Louie Alas tries to lead his team to a second straight victory after starting the season with a loss.

But standing in his way is his son, NLEX star guard Kevin Alas, and the rest of the Road Warriors, who are eager to extend their winning streak to three games for the solo lead in the standings.

Kevin has faced his father a handful of times when Louie was still the lead assistant at Alaska, but it will be the first time father and son will face off since the elder Alas took the head coaching reins at Phoenix.

“I’m excited,” Kevin told SPIN.ph on the eve of their faceoff at 4:30 p.m. “For me, it’s a big deal, dahil pareho naming gusto manalo, then at the same time, parang ako, may gustong patunayan, siya rin may gustong patunayan.”

“As his son, gusto ko siya maging successful in the PBA. Ako naman, gusto ko din maging successful. Siguro, ayaw ko lang siya maging successful pag kalaban ako sa court,” the 26-year-old fourth-year pro added with a smile.

The battle lines have been drawn as Kevin bared that his mom, Liza, will cheer for Louie, while Kieffer, the youngest of four siblings, will side with his older brother.

“When we were celebrating New Year’s eve, tinanong ko si mom kung san siya magche-cheer, sa Phoenix daw siya. Tapos inask ko si Kieffer, NLEX daw siya,” Kevin said.

Friendly banter was also thrown between father and son.

“Light biruan lang, like syempre ang daming kinain nung New Year’s eve, so nag-work out ako  sa bahay dahil break pa kami nun, so parang nagbiro yung dad ko na, ‘kahit mag-ganyan ka, hindi mo naman kami tatalunin eh,’” Kevin said with a chuckle.

“Puro biru-biruan lang. We don’t talk about it as much. We’re both excited,” he added, saying more relatives will come to watch them go at it.
