CYRUS Baguio’s familiarity with a longtime teammate has allowed him to fit easily and show his playmaking ability right in his first game for Phoenix in the PBA Governors’ Cup.

The veteran shooting guard kept feeding former Red Bull teammate Mick Pennisi as well as the Fuel Masters’ other big men to end up dishing out nine assists in his debut for the team in its 124-113 loss to San Miguel Beer on Sunday.

“Na-miss ko yung pick-and-roll namin ni Pennisi,” said Baguio, who played with the Filipino-Australian stretch big man for five years bfore being reunited when the former was acquired by Phoenix from Alaska.

Pennisi knocked down one of his four triples, while Norbert Torres, Prince Caperal, and import Marcus Simmons also found the mark from long range - thanks to Baguio assists.

“Yung big man dito, puro shooters din so ang sarap pasahan,” Baguio said. “So sana maging okay pa, sana mag-adjust pa kami para maipanalo naman namin next time.”

That enabled the 13-year veteran, known for his slashing and scoring ability, to flaunt his all-around game as he flirted with a triple-double of 13 points, seven boards, one steal, one block in almost 37 minutes of play.

As a result, Baguio, who averaged less than 24 minutes per game for Alaska, played his most playing time in a while.

“Tingin ko marami pang adjustment lalo na parang nabigla ako sa playing time, medyo mahaba ang playing time ko,” the 35-year-old cager said. “Siguro gusto rin ipakita ni coach na yung kumpyansa niya sa akin at mag-gel ako sa mga teammates ko.”

“Medyo napagod din ako sa totoo lang pero sa tingin ko kailangan kong magpa-kundisyon kasi baka gamitin ako ni Coach Ariel (Vanguardia),” he added.

“Isa ako sa inaasahan niya, alam ko naman yun eh, hinahanap nya ako lagi, so kailangan ko lang siguro magpa-kundisyon sa ngayon.”
