AFTER winning his first PBA match-up against his former mentor Danny Ildefonso, Petron big man June Mar Fajardo said he hopes the Meralco veteran can play a few more years, knowing the former two-time league Most Valuable Player still has enough left on his tank.
“Oo, kaya pa niya (Ildefonso) saka yung experience niya sobrang taas. Sana makalaro pa siya ng ilang years pa,” Fajardo said on Saturday after leading the Boosters to a 96-87 drubbing of Meralco.
Although Ildefonso failed to prevent the 6-foot-10 Fajardo from notching his 10th double-double for the conference with his 19-point, 15-rebound performance, the 37-year-old big man out of National University had his own shining moments during their PLDT myDSL-Philippine Cup game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Fajardo noted Ildefonso simply used his experience in trying to outmaneuver him a couple of times under the basket.
Midway through the second period and with the crowd egging him on, Ildefonso took several dribbles from the low block before throwing a head fake followed by a quick spin move towards the basket for a three-point play off his former understudy.
The Petron sophomore slotman claimed there never was a point in the game that he let his guard down against Ildefonso.
“Hindi, laro ko na talaga yun,” Fajardo said, referring to the play when Ildefonso managed to spin away from him for the three-point play.
“Akala ko didiretso siya, pero moves niya 'yun eh. Saka yung spin, siya nagturo sa akin nun eh, nag spin ako nung first half, na-anticipate niya eh, alam niya,” he added.
Despite Fajardo’s size, ILdefonso managed to play his best game as a Meralco Bolt, finishing the game with 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and five blocks in 31 minutes of play.
