AFTER seeing Petron put an end to Rain or Shine's reign as PBA Governors’ Cup champion, Elasto Painters co-owner Raymund Yu declared the Boosters will be the the team to beat in the pro league in the years to come.
The youthful Rain or Shine executive believes Petron is destined to win the franchise’s 20th championship in style against sister team San Mig and extend its reign long after that.
All because of one man: June Mar Fajardo.
“I think they are the most consistent team this Governors’ cup. And I think they will go all the way,” Yu said, a day after his team was eliminated by the Blaze Boosters in Game Four of their semifinal series.
“Petron is the new Talk 'N Text (in terms of dominance). But the big difference is, Petron has a 6-10 monster in June Mar Fajardo,” he added.
Yu believes that simultaneous with Petron’s dominance in the PBA will be the rise of rookie big man Fajardo as the league's premier big man.
“Grabe talaga yang Fajardo. Hindi talaga naming mapigilan. Dun kami nahirapan. Yung shooting sa labas ng Petron, okay sa amin yun. Sa presence ni June Mar sa ilalim kami talaga nasaktan,” Yu said.
“Fajardo is indeed an immovable force inside the paint. Tapos you can’t help but marvel at their wingmen,” Yu added. “Baka nga Petron will have a slightly longer reign than Talk n’ Text.”
With this, Yu said Rain or Shine will focus its attention on getting somebody who can match up well with the 23-year old Pinamungajan, Cebu native.
Rain or Shine has two first-round picks in the coming rookie draft including the third choice overall, which they hope to use on one of the marquee big men coming in namely Gregory Slaughter, Ian Sangalang and Raymond Almazan.
Yu also said they want to use their second first-round pick on another big man.
“Sana umabot sa amin si Slaughter. Tingin ko he has the size to match up with Fajardo. Tapos may magandang perimeter shot siya,” he said, while hoping that Bobby Ray Parks, Jr. will make himself available "to make the draft one pick deeper."
