POTENTIAL first round pick Raymond Almazan could make the celebrated `Extra Rice Inc’ a triumvirate if and when Rain or Shine opted to use the No. 3 overall pick on the lanky Letran big man in the coming PBA draft.
The gangling 6-foot-7 native of Orion, Bataan admitted he’s trying to bulk up as he prepares for the constant banging and physical plays in the pro league.
“Kailangan pa mag-add ng weight kasi yan ang laging sinasabi sa akin, na pagdating ng PBA, tataba naman daw ako. Nag-e-extra rice ako, pero ayaw ko naman ng ganun (kalaki),” Almazan said with a big laugh, referring to the popular heavyweight frontline of Rain or Shine’s Beau Belga and JR Quinahan dubbed as `Extra Rice Inc.’
Almazan will likely end up as teammates with both Belga and Quinahan should everything fall according to plan on draft day, with Ginebra tapping big man Greg Slaughter as the top overall selection and San Mig Coffee opting for former NCAA Most Valuable Player Ian Sangalang.
At present, the Letran stalwart weighs only 194 pounds although he’s trying to emulate the physique of second cousin Kerby Raymundo of Meralco, which Almazan said could be the ideal weight for him.
Though Almazan is a few days away from fulfilling his dream of playing in Asia’s first play for pay basketball league, he admits feeling a bit nervous, especially since expectations are high for him to make it big in Asia’s first ever pro league.
“Kinakabahan ako na excited, pero ready na lang ako ano man ang mangyari,” he said.
First thing first as Almazan eyes to end his collegiate career with an NCAA men’s championship with the Knights.
The Intramuros-based school ended the eliminations with a 14-4 win-loss record to snare the No. 2 seeding in the Final Four.
