FROM 'El Destructor' to 'Mickey Mouse', Eugene Phelps’ moniker transformation came on Wednesday night when he showed up for Phoenix’s playoff game against Rain or Shine with a double pony tail hairdo.
The prolific Fuel Masters import said teammate Simon Enciso encouraged him to don the look, which seemed to bring good luck as they eliminated the Elasto Painters, 105-94, to clinch the last playoff berth in the PBA Governors Cup.
“Simon told me I should try it and I did, so it worked for us,” Phelps said.
“You tell me (if it brought good luck),” he added. “I might switch it up a little bit next game. I’m going to see, but I played pretty good with it, so I might keep it again.”
How about the Mickey Mouse nickname?
“I heard it during the game, so if they want to call me that, that’s fine as long as we win,” he said with a smile. “You can call me whatever.”
Phelps, though, was his usual destructive self as he wreaked havoc for 40 points on top of 14 rebounds, six assists, and two blocks to lead the Fuel Masters.
“I just tried to go a hundred percent all the time,” the Phoenix import said. “After the last two games, I felt like I let my team down, so I told myself the whole week that I would try to get the win no matter what it takes.”
