ANTIPOLO – Eugene Phelps didn’t mind that Phoenix hardly lived up to its identity as a high-octane offensive team yet still emerged victorious against Blackwater, 93-81, in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Wednesday night at the Ynares Center.
Coming into the game as the second-best offensive team in the league, averaging 105.4 points in their first eight games and 107.6 points in their wins, the Fuel Maters were held to their lowest output in their five wins.
Not that it mattered for Phelps.
“It really doesn’t matter; we won,” said Phelps, whose team only had 12 fast-break points. "The score could be ten-to-nine, but as long as we get the win, that’s what matters.”
“We started playing sluggish, but it doesn’t really matter,” added the prolific import, who registered 29 points and 26 boards to lead the Fuel Maters, who moved up to .500 after winning their fifth game against four loses.
Phelps has been the biggest factor regarding Phoenix’s rise, but he continued to play down his contributions.
“It’s not easy. A lot of games, I get double or triple-teamed, so I got to pass the ball, but I got great teammates and I believe in them,” said Phelps, who dished out four assists in 42 minutes against the Elite. “If I see them wide open, I’m going to give them the ball. If I get a one-on-one situation, I’m going to attack the basket.”
“Lately, we’ve been coming as a team,” he added. “We just play hard at practice and convert it to the games.”
