RONALD Tubid scored on an unmolested layup with 18.1 seconds to play, while Josh Vanlandingham missed a potential game-winning shot as Barako Bull escaped with a heart-stopping 95-94 victory over hardluck Globalport on Sunday night in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Emerging with the ball after a wild loose ball scramble that left a lot of scattered bodies on the floor, Sean Anthony drove in and found Tubid wide open for a basket from point-blank range that gave the Energy Cola the lead, 95-94, time down to 18 seconds.
The Batang Pier put the ball in the hands of Willie Miller in their final possession, but a broken play saw the ball go to Vanlandingham in the deep right corner for a wide-open jumper that missed the mark, allowing the Energy Cola to end their three-game losing spell and chalk up their third win in eight starts.
“I told Ronald before that scramble for looseball to step up to the plate because you’re our number one guy right now in the number two position," said Barako Bull coach Junel Baculi. "He’s the first option. If there are instances like that, he should take charge. It’s his role.”
The game had been marked by six deadlocks and 14 lead changes. Barako Bull held its biggest advantage at 65-55 during the halfway mark of the third period, while Globalport erected its biggest margin at 86-79 after opening the final period on a 12-2 blast.
Globalport's loss spoiled a huge night of Mark Yee, who finished the game with 20 points, on top of seven rebounds and one steal.
Yee also got into a shoving match with Enrico Villanueva during the final minutes of the first half. Yee was only assessed with a regular foul, while the 6-5 Villanueva was assessed with a technical foul for second motion.
Globalport, which absorbed its fourth straight loss, continued to miss the services of Gary David and burly forward Jondan Salvador due to injuries.
Miller, the two-time league MVP, finished with 17 points and eight assists for the skidding Batang Pier, while rookies Vic Manuel and Jason Deutchman added 12 and 11, respectively.
On the other hand, Tubid led all Barako Bull scorers with 19 points, while Villanueva finished with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.
“Medyo nag struggle ang team eh, especially Josh (Urbiztondo). We need him in this team. But also we have to improve on our offensive sets because we’ve been relying too much on Enrico Villanueva on creating at the post. We need to inject some variation on the offense,” Baculi said.
