RAIN or Shine showed better execution and endgame poise to outlast a pesky Globalport side, 94-83, in the PBA Philippine Cup on Saturday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
Jervy Cruz stepped up for the Elasto Painters, finishing with a career-high double-double effort of 22 points and 16 rebounds in 31 minutes.
The Elasto Painters forced the Batang Pier to commit two huge turnovers towards the final stretch of the game, enabling them to turn what had been a close five-point contest into a 90-79 lead to put the game beyond doubt.
“We just kept our game steady sa endgame. I think some maturity we learned from the Finals helped us finish the game in a solid manner,” said Rain or Shine winning coach Yeng Guiao, whose team hiked its record to 3-1.
“Global is a solid team. Their rookies played well. The future is bright for this team. They just need time to gel and learn the roles a little bit,” he added.
Globalport’s youngsters led by rookie Fil-Am Jason Deutchman, freshman guard AJ Mandani, and Rey Guevara led the offensive for the Batang Pier most of the way.
Guiao in fact, admitted they had a hard time containing the Globalport trio because of their speed and outside shooting.
“I think they’ll (Batang Pier) be more dangerous towards the middle or end of the conference. These new guys can play. But we got a few breaks towards the end and then we got some offensive rebounds that created opportunities for us,” noted Guiao, whose team won the battle of the boards, 57-51.
Playing solid defense, Rain or Shine forced Globalport to 21 turnovers, converting them to 17 points. Willie Miller and Rabeh Al Hussaini, the subject of Rain or Shine’s tight defense, each had four turnovers, which prevented Globalport from making any serious run down the stretch.
Jeff Chan, who scored a career-high 35 points the last time out against Air21, added 13 for Rain or Shine after shooting just five-of-16 from the field, while Ronnie Matias and JR Quinahan added 11 points apiece.
Deutchman, the hero in Globalport’s first win in the PBA on Wednesday against Meralco, scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Batang Pier. Mandani and Guevara added 17 and 13, respectively, while Miller had a quiet 10 points on three-of-10 shooting, though he contributed 11 rebounds.
