GARY David nailed the go-ahead three-pointer with eight seconds to play to lead Globalport to a 91-88 upset win over tournament favorite Alaska in the PBA Governors Cup on Friday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Still feeling his way into the team after his stint with Gilas Pilipinas, David was all net with his three-point shot after getting the feed from Sol Mercado to lead Globalport to its second win in three starts.
“Gary just has to forget the bad shots and move on to the next shot. And that's Gary. He's a scorer," Globalport coach Junel Baculi said following the win over the reigning Commissioner's Cup champions.
The Aces had one last chance to send the game to overtime but JV Casio took too much time off the clock and was forced to heave a three-point shot over the much bigger Jay Washington.
Casio completely misfired as the Aces opened the conference on a low note.
Globalport kept the Aces at bay in a game marked by 11 deadlocks and 13 lead changes before two-time MVP Willie Miller hit two big baskets late for the Batang Pier - both off Calvin Abueva.
Import Markeith Cummings led the Batang Pier with 28 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. The 6-5 import even had a highlight play late in the third period where he hit a monster dunk off the rookie Abueva.
Miller added 14 points while Washington added 11 and nine boards for the Batang Pier.
Wendell McKines led the Aces with 28 points and 13 rebounds, while Sonny Thoss chipped in 16.
GlobalPort 91 - Cummings 28, Miller 14, Washington 11, David 10, Mercado 9, Hayes 5, Nabong 4, Lingganay 4, Yee 4, Alonzo 2, Faundo 0.
