A FORMER Meralco player struck the dagger that took the life out of the Bolts’ bid for the no. 1 seed in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Ed Daquioag nailed a clutch three-pointer in the dying seconds of overtime period that clinched for Rain or Shine a 106-99 win over Meralco Sunday and the top spot in the playoffs of the mid-season conference.
Daquioag sank his third and final three-pointer for the game with 12 seconds left to help the Elasto Painters improve to 9-1 and extend their winning streak to six games.
The sophomore guard, selected by the Bolts in the special rookie draft two years ago but eventually traded to the Elasto Painters for fellow Gilas cadet Mike Tolomia after just two conferences, went 3-of-4 from three-point range – and 4-of-5 overall – for a total of 11 points.
The game-clincher however, was not meant to get even against his former team, Daquioag clarified.
“OK naman kami ng Meralco. Walang galit or whatever,” said the former University of Santo Tomas stalwart with a big smile on his face. “Pero siyempre masaya dahil panalo.”
The 26-year-old native of Dingras, Ilocos Norte said there was no hesitation on his part to shoot when he found himself open for that three-pointer.
“Open shot, e. Ganun naman kami sa team. Kung sino ang libre, tira,” said Daquioag.
Daquioag said the win over Meralco - the fourth in overtime for Rain or Shine this conference - will be a big confidence boost heading to the playoffs.
“Magandang buwelo ito papupunta ng playoffs,” he said.
