WHILE Dwight Howard will not be suiting up for Converge in the coming PBA 49th Season Commissioner's Cup, team management is looking to secure his services once more next year for Strong Group Athletics.
Charles Tiu said management will try to bring in the former NBA MVP yet again for SGA’s participation in the Dubai International Basketball Championship for the second straight year.
“Dwight wasn’t available, as he had some commitments, so it didn’t materialize. We'll look to bring him back in our Strong Group team for Dubai next year,” said Tiu, who concurrently serves as FiberXers assistant and SGA shot-caller.
Howard participated in the American TV dance competition Dancing with the Stars where he was recently eliminated.
The 6-foot-10 center, who suited up for different teams from 2004 to 2022, most notably with the Orlando Magic, was also recently spotted at the Crypto.com Arena watching a game of the Los Angeles Lakers, the team with whom he won his lone NBA crown in the 2020 bubble.
Diallo a seamless fit with young Converge
Converge was mulling bringing in the 38-year-old Howard for the Commissioner’s Cup, with the conference not enforcing any height limit.
Due to his unavailability, however, the FiberXers then turned their attention to former NBA G League and Japan B.League player Cheick Diallo.
Tiu said Diallo brings a lot to the table, especially with the Malian import being 28 years old, much younger than Howard.
“Diallo is a bit younger, fresher legs,” said Tiu in an interview with SPIN.ph. “He also communicates well and is a very solid team player who will do what it takes for us to win. He will help our locals get better.”
