EVEN before he cast his name in the 2014 draft pool, Ronald Pascual admitted that there was already pressure on him to emulate the PBA success of former San Sebastian teammates and stablemates Calvin Abueva and Ian Sangalang.

But after the last-minute applicant was made the surprise third overall pick by San Miguel Beer on Sunday, the 26-year-old Pampangueno admitted the pressure has just doubled.

“Yun nga po eh. Sobra po akong na-pe-pressure ngayon. Kasi parang andami ko tuloy lalo na gustong patunayan,” said Pascual, adding he has kept track of the negative comments online and the high expectations from Beermen fans.

San Miguel Beer let go of Chico Lanete, Jojo Duncil, a first-round pick in 2016 and a second-round pick in 2014 just to get its hands on the No. 3 pick owned by Barako Bull.

Almost everybody expected the Beermen to use the pick on Chris Banchero, the Fil-Italian guard who had starred for the company's team in the Asean Basketball League.

When the Beermen picked Pascual instead, the former San Sebastian Stags gunner admitted the pressure is now on him to prove that San Miguel did the right thing by drafting him and not Banchero.

Yun pa lang mabigat na eh,” added the streak shooting discovery of Pampanga vice governor Dennis Pineda.

“Ngayon eto nadagdagan pa, kailangan kong patunayan na tama ako ang na-draft ng San Miguel at hindi si Chris Banchero,” added the third member of 'Baste's' 'Pinatubo Trio.'

Pascual revealed he has been hounded by negative comments from Beermen fans, who have been protesting San Miguel’s decision to draft him instead of the good-looking point guard Banchero.

Ayaw ko silang kontrahin,” said Pascual.

Pascual, however, has vowed to prove his worth.

Pascual also compared his position now at San Miguel to how he came about as one of the top amateur players today.

Calvin Abueva, a former teammate, believes that a lot of people, particularly the non-believers of Pascual, will eat their words a year from now.

Hindi nyo alam kakayahan niyan,” said Abueva, who ironically is now a teammate of Banchero at Alaska.

Asked if Pascual is a good fit to San Miguel which has a surplus of talent in the wing spots in Marcio Lassiter, Chris Lutz, Ronald Tubid, and Arwind Santos, Abueva nodded.

“May depensa pa yan. Marami siyang mismatch.”

And now that the challenge is on him, Pascual declared that he is up to the task.

“OK po ako. Handa ko pong patunayan ang sarili ko. Gaya nila Calvin at Ian, gusto kong maging instant impact sa rookie year ko,” he said with a smile.
